Daine Brown, coach of Albion United, says even though his team is on a high after scoring their ninth win from 10 games – a 1-0 triumph over Zone B leaders Dunbeholden – they will not be drop their guard in the LIME St Catherine FA Division One football competition.
“We will not be complacent. We can’t afford that right now. As I have been saying all season, the main aim is to top the league and return to the Major League,” said Brown, following their cross-zone fixture at Albion Oval, Ellerslie Pen, last Saturday. “The team is training really hard now and we are taking it one game at a time.”
The all-important goal was scored by Kenny Lee, who had transferred from Albion to Humble Lion and has now returned to the hunting ground that he played on and made his name. His 19th-minute strike was enough to take the runaway leaders to 27 points.
The league’s leading striker, with 16 goals, schoolboy Tavoy Morgan, didn’t get on the scoresheet, but showed glimpses of his brilliance. In second-half action, he rifled a powerful left-footed shot from the edge of the 18-yard box that was blocked by goalie Andy Gayle. Then, moments later, he struck a low free kick that forced the visitors’ custodian to dive full stretch to parry the ball for a corner kick.
Albion have already pocketed the mid-season crown, with a 4-1 win over Dunbeholden in the final on Sunday, January 20.
Regiel Smith, the coach of Dunbeholden, noted their improvements this time.
“It wasn’t our best team, due to work commitments,” he said. “We started a much weaker team than what we had for the mid-season finals and got a better result, with regards to the scoreline. We got 4-1 the last time we played them (Albion) and today is 1-0.
“The guys stuck to the game plan, we just gave up a silly goal. Our goalkeeper made a cardinal sin – he was beaten on his near post – and we weren’t able to fully recover from that.”
