TIVOLI Wizards defeated mid-season champions Spanish Town Spartans 67-61 as the second round of the 2013 FLOW/National Basketball League (NBL) Southern Conference competition continued at the Pembroke Hall Court last Sunday.It was also sweet revenge for the former champions Wizards, who were beaten 62-50 in the preliminary round by the Spartans.The Wizards, coached by Edward Marshall, were led by a game-high 27 points, including six rebounds, three steals and one assist by Andy Smith.The Wizards dominated through Smith and Anthony Farquharson to take a 24-14 lead at the end of the first quarter. The victors increased the lead in the second quarter, as Javon Bailey and Gary Reid made their presence felt, and the Wizards held a commanding 42-29 lead at the half-time break.The Spartans gave an improved performance in the third quarter through Bailey and Reid, as they cut the Wizards’ lead through good play to 55-49.Action quickened in the fourth and final quarter as the Spartans and the Wizards were engaged in a ding-dong battle. However, it was not to be as both teams scored 12 points with the Wizards holding on for the win.The other main contributor for the Wizards was Farquharson, who scored 17 points, had seven rebounds, one block shot and two steals, while for the Spartans, Bailey scored 20 points, six rebounds, five steals, one block shot and two assists, and teammate Reid added 13 points, six rebounds and three steals.Meanwhile, in another game played at the same venue, Pembroke Hall clipped Selassie Gardens 65-64. The quarterly scores for Pembroke Hall were 10-19, 26-30, 39-50 and 65-64 points.The principal scorers for Pembroke Hall were Christopher Walker with 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists, and Michael Jackson with 11 points and seven rebounds, while for Selassie Gardens, Roger Chisholm got 20 points and four rebounds.Also, defending NBL champions Urban Knights defeated St George’s Saints 61-54, with quarterly scores of 14-10, 27-22, and 41-38. Leading scorer for the Knights was Kwame Lawrence, who got 20 points and 10 rebounds, while for the Saints Conroy Morgan scored 15 points and three rebounds.St George’s Slayers came out with a close 67-63 win over the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF). The winners had quarterly scores of 25-23, 39-30, and 57-40.Leon Chung with 19 points and three rebounds and Rohan Cruise with 13 points, five rebounds and four assists led the scoring for the Slayers, while Keeble Wright with 16 points, eight rebounds, and Raymi Franklin with 13 points were the top scorers for the soldiers.
