DESPITE FINANCIAL difficulties, The Woman’s Club continues to stand by its motto ‘not for ourselves alone’ by supporting various charities.

The club recently stayed true to its mandate and held an international lunch to raise funds for several charities at the Liguanea Club, St Andrew.

“It is important that we have been around for a long time. Our main charity at the Woman’s Club is the Woman’s Club Home for the Elderly. The home has elderly ladies who have done work for Jamaica and are now too old to perform. We have them live in the home and also provide all the services,” Blossom Hakansson, president of the Woman’s Club, told The Gleaner.

She added: “We also support various charities throughout the year, such as the Salvation Army, as we contribute to their sports day. We also have a children’s party that has been going on for the past 50 years for children from the St Andrew settlement.”

Making jamaica better

Hakansson said the club tries its best to help make Jamaica a better place through these initiatives.

She also expressed concern about the financial situation that their main charity, the Woman’s Home, faces in meeting its day-to-day financial obligations. She made an appeal to those who have benefited from the service of the home over the years or those who might need this service in the future to assist if possible.

Wyvolyn Gager, an independent media production professional who was guest speaker at the luncheon, also shared her perspective on Jamaica over the last 50 years and the contribution that women have played towards its progression.

“The achievement of Jamaican women should be recognised as a platform for reflection. It has been well documented and needs no fresh recital from this age. You do not need me to tell you how far Jamaica has come in it’s 50 years since our country has joined the ranks of independent sovereign nations. We currently have a female prime minister and that alone shows that women are making their mark in all areas of life,” Gager told the gathering.
